This series is about a private investigator, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) who happens to be a vampire. Not your typical vampire fare, it has a nice balance of character development, humour and darkness. Regarding Mick’s voice-overs throughout the series - I would not have expected this to work. The concept brings to mind the cheesy PI shows from way back. The reality, however, is different. Alex O’Loughlin pulls it off admirably. It really works!
The casting is a work of art. They could not have picked a better ensemble. Josef (played by Jason Dohring) provides an interesting and humorous complement to Mick. His dry wit keeps you in stitches. Beth (Sophia Myles) and Mick have a very palpable chemistry. The acting between them seems almost effortless, and the dialogue is delivered in a comfortable manner, not forced. Each of the actors in this series is able to use facial expressions to complement the dialogue. It’s not necessary for the dialogue to carry the entire story, or to define the emotions involved. A simple look says more than mere words, and the actors use this to full advantage.
